Hubert Schmalix 1952

The Austrian visual artist is one of the most prominent contemporary artists. He was born in Graz and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Max Melcher. He is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the former Neue Wilden. In his pictures Hubert Schmalix creates a light that does not exist in reality. He creates light through colours. He is not interested in depicting a light that he sees in the landscape or in a face. It simply happens by making parts of the picture lighter and others darker. This is where the real drama comes from. Since the 1970s he has been exhibiting his paintings in the most renowned galleries and art forums worldwide.
