In her work, Käthe Schönle uses the media of painting, drawing, collage and objects to explore the themes of tense relationships and the ambivalence of human interaction.
Schönle scrutinises individual and social decision-making and action systems and examines their connection with internal, external, artificial and natural structures, and her interest in the hybrid, the ambiguous and the multi-layered runs through her entire oeuvre.
In Käthe Schönle's work, abstraction and figuration meet at eye level. The two possibilities of painting are never in competition in the oeuvre of the Vienna-based artist, but rather in mutually enriching completion. Where a line becomes too restrictive, the painterly works open up to deep surfaces, diffuse light and traces that are open to interpretation.
