Kathrin Isabell Rhomberg studied painting at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and at Wimbledon College of Arts London. Today the artist lives and works in Salzburg and Vienna.  

Rhomberg's oil paintings are based on metallic, reflective surfaces that capture their surroundings and reproduce them in the form of an artistic play of colours. Digital sketches are generated from photographic source material, which ultimately serve as the starting point for the painterly process.
The central theme of current works is the motif of folds. The individual folds can be read purely as such, but as a whole they also reveal fields, flowers or mountain landscapes.
The pleats depicted also have a comprehensive, historical basis. ‘This motif, which has been anchored in art history for centuries, is translated into a contemporary language and linked to current discourses on the relationship between man and nature, such as theories about the Anthropocene. The focus of interest is the painterly examination of the ambivalent relationship between the artificial / man-made and our image of the natural.’ - Kathrin Rhomberg
The choice of colour and composition is not only an intuitive one, but is often influenced by art historical theory and the motifs of the 16th to 19th centuries. In particular, the book Das selbstbewusste Bild: Vom Ursprung der Malerei by the art historian Victor I. Stoichita and the theories it expounds on drapery and framing influenced Rhomberg's work. Direct quotations of individual works from the history of painting can also be found in the artist's repertoire. For example, Caspar David Friedrich's ‘Chalk Cliffs on Rügen’ from 1818 forms the counterpart to Kahrin Rhomberg's painting THIS IS WATER (2022).
