Thomas Reinhold 1953

Over the years, Thomas Reinhold has created a stringent painterly oeuvre in an unmistakable artistic style that is characterized by consistent abstraction and a harmonious use of colour and form. The conciseness of his paintings lies in the painterly mastery with which Thomas Reinhold combines the weighting of color and form into a pictorial composition.

“I am interested in the structural and processual, the concept of an innovation of painterly space that grows by itself through the superimposition of layers.” - Thomas Reinhold

Reinhold does not apply the paint to the canvas with a brush, but pours it on the basis of a previously conceived pictorial composition. Between planning and intuition, he creates finely superimposed layers of paint with dense areas, empty spaces with transparent areas of color, thin gutter traces with boldly luminous or discreetly delicate coloring. The layers of translucent and opaque areas of color create a new dimension of painterly spatiality. Thomas Reinhold works in series, each of which explores different possibilities of pictorial composition. They are never complete in the true sense of the word and are a constant feature of his artistic practice. What Reinhold depicts is not an image of the world, but a composition that finds its meaning in the painterly order of the painting.  His art is self-referential, purist and reduced to the essentials.
