Gerlinde Thuma 1962

Gerlinde Thuma studied at the University of Applied Arts at Maria Lassnig class. Since then, numerous solo and group exhibitions, projects, symposiums and trips with an artistic focus have followed at home and abroad

The basic principle of my way of working is the abstracted visualization of observations and events that appear on the image medium Snapshot and memory captured become. In tracking down special places and Gerlinde Thuma dives into the topography of the landscape and also under the visible surface and into temporal sequences.

Gerlinde Thuma's intention is to capture the dimensions of time - to thematize the span and tension between two points in time using a tangible object, to put circumstances in relation, to formulate relationships and correspondences. Sparsely placed symbols and condensations build up a field of tension and create an image space on the canvas that refers to the moving nature of space. Using a lot of water, pigment and charcoal are spread over the canvas in many layers on top of each other sponged and applied this way. The resulting deposits form in slow drying processes. The process that forms nature is simulated and as such becomes the painting process on the image medium. The artist provides the framework and direction and stops the process in a meaningful moment.
