Jakob Gasteiger 1953

Jakob Gasteiger is considered a representative of analytical painting. In his works he questions parameters of painting and thematizes, expands and breaks through the boundaries of graphics, painting and sculpture.

The most extensive and at the same time best-known group of the artist's works are his mostly monochrome paintings with relief-like structures, which are formed by using a comb spatula when applying the paint to the picture's background. Within this working process, color is not used by Gasteiger as a carrier of content or meaning, but as a material per se. The color material serves the artist to investigate questions of color materials and the boundaries between non-color to color, of material, color and chromaticity. The comb spatula is Gasteiger's tool. It replaces the brush and allows to work without personal handwriting in the sense of a mechanical process.

Since the end of 2018, Gasteiger has expanded this group of works with the use of neon colors. These are very garish colors that accentuate the relief-like structures of these compositions in a new way and at the same time irritate the eye to a special degree and challenge it through optical illusions. Jakob Gasteiger is represented in museums and galleries in over 300 individual and exhibition participations. Most recently, his work was presented in a solo show at ALBERTINA Vienna in 2021. After the neon colorfulness of recent years, Gasteiger's latest works turn to darkly iridescent, more muted colors that give his paintings a great elegance.
