Fascinated by wood and her father's sculpture workshop, Jessica Strixner began to take an interest in working with natural materials. For the sculptor Jessica Strixner, items of clothing form the centre of her work. They are a means of expression in our society, categorise us into different groups, make political statements and help to emphasise our personality.
The artist isolates the item of clothing from its wearer and thus reduces it to its own statement, which nevertheless offers an intimate insight into the life of its former wearer. This gives the wooden pieces an almost iconic character. However, it is up to the viewer to decide what image they want the respective item of clothing to convey about its wearer.
These are everyday objects to which little attention is paid and which now gain in significance. The moment in which the garments were hung up, forgotten or taken off is captured. Perhaps they tell the viewer about a reunion, a moment of carelessness or even a beautiful encounter.
The special charm of Strixner's works comes from the fact that he creates supposedly soft items of clothing from the hard material of wood. The fine finishing and painting of the sculptures creates an optical illusion that only reveals the fine fibres and wooden structures of the underlying material on closer inspection.
